根据贺敬之、丁毅同名歌剧改编。 1935年，在华北的一个偏僻农村里，贫苦农民杨白劳的女儿喜儿与青年农民王大春相爱。地主黄世仁见色心动，逼债上门。杨白劳被逼自杀，喜儿也被黄世仁奸污。后喜儿逃出黄家，匿身深山丛林，头发全变白了。解放后终于伸冤雪恨，重见光明。

In the 1930s there lives a poor peasant called Yang Bailao in a remote village of South China. He has a daughter called Xi’er , who falls in love with a young peasant. But Huang Shiren, a local landlord, attracted by the beauty of Xi’er, forces Yang Bailao to set off his debt with her daughter. Yand does not agree and then he is forced to commit suicide and his daughter is raped by the landlord. She later escapes into a deep forest and her hair turns into grey in no time. Only after liberation can she revenge her father and have a new life.
